Smartchitecture Creative Collective

Smartchitecture is an interdisciplinary collective of young professionals and students. When designing from products till living environment a mutual inspiration takes place. We think that every design has more impact than the aimed scale. A master plan can only succeed when underlying structures work and a lamp can only exceed when placed in a fitted architectural design.

100419_SFEERVERpLICHTING- Delft

First prize Werkplaats spoorzone Delft idea competition.
According to the current planning, the Delft railway zone will undergo a transformation for the upcoming twenty years. The character will literally transform. Even when the plan is "finished" there is no clear definition of character or atmosphere yet. Time is needed to form an atmosphere. The public green has to grow for decades after the completion of the built to compete with its context. The huge building site asks for a continuity. A continuity of atmosphere. Sfeerverplichting. (litt. obliged atmosphere lighting) A movable micro park will be placed. The park is characterized by a crafted tree. The tree will be constructed with recycled wood and directly reach its final height, where the real trees have to compete with. The lit tree will define an atmosphere. This atmosphere will be the first step in the new railroad zone character. In the tree, an observational post is constructed for the Delft inhabitants to follow the built.

090622_'Onder Moeders Paraplu'-Waarderpolder Haarlem-NL

The ‘Amsterdamse Poort’ used to be the entrance of Haarlem. An entrance front the outer green area. Due to the ‘Waarderpolder’, a collage of business and industry, the connection between city centre and the ‘Haarlemmer Liede’ is lost. The municipality tried to make a reconnection by restructuring in the eighties, but the industrial barrier is too big. This proposal offers a solution to reconnect the old Haarlem with his green outer area. By reinterpretation of the characteristics of the city centre, the industry and the nature a reconnection between the centuries old city centre and the eastern green is made. The two parts, with the ‘Waarderpolder’ in between, find each other “Onder Moeders Paraplu”(underneath mothers umbrella). The umbrella is a catalyser between the car free city centre, with his different cultural activities and the high quality recreation. The umbrella is sustainable. The umbrella connects people. The umbrella connects public space. The umbrella connects urban districts. The umbrella connects Haarlem.
By adding a series of small umbrellas, a connection can be made. The series starts with an hotel (landmark) and can be extended within the given character.

090526_Delft: More than you expect

Delft has different faces, an historical, an innovative and a tachnical. In relation to Delft, these aspects have one thing in common: the exceed all expectations. One could say that the potential of Delft is bigger than the relativily small city.
During a visit to Delft, the design is a city map, showing alle qualities of Delft. While at home, it folds out as a flower carrier, again: More than you expect.

080601_Light Table

A (garden)table is more than an object where people sit, talk, eat or drink. It is an object defining the space and the atmosphere. This design makes the table the central element of a space. A lightsource is reflected by the wood, so the warm colors 'cool' the foot. The table is part of a series of exterior furniture, executed in wood and concrete.

071006_Burgemeester zoekt woning-Prijsvraag

Mayor Opstelten on wheels.
With ecological arguments in mind, the city of Rotterdam asks for a sustainable and eco-friendly design of housing for the current mayor, Ivo Opstelten. The program of the building would be a combination of a private house and the typical mayor program: meeting and working. This program would result in an inefficient building, no matter how the building would be used: the mayor can only use one of the functions at the time. This inefficient separation of programs can be seen as a metaphor for the city of Rotterdam. If Rotterdam wants to be an eco-friendly city, the city program needs to change. When the standard housing/working-program is exploded, the different functions can connect to analogue functions. This clustering will take place on an urban scale, each cluster will have its own energy demands and therefore be efficient. The mayor of Rotterdam is the ideal person to appoint the qualities of the city and use them in his own program of working and living. The camper or caravan as an icon can point out the different qualities of the city and make a visual connection for the inhabitants. When the camper is a known logo of the city hall and mayor of Rotterdam, it can be used to stimulate, use or create qualities of the city.
